Moving to a new home can be stressful, but packing your belongings into a storage container doesn’t have to be.
With some planning and organization, you can load your container efficiently so your items are protected during the moving process.
As a long-time client of storage and moving companies near me, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks for getting the most out of my storage container. Here’s my step-by-step guide to packing a storage container for a smooth move.
Start by Categorizing Your Belongings
The first step is to go through everything you plan to pack and categorize items into groups. For example, put all decor items together, all kitchen items together, clothes in one area, etc. This helps you visualize what will be moving and figure out the best way to load the container.
Pro tip: Use color coded labels to mark boxes by room or category! This keeps things neat and helps movers know where to put boxes in your new place.
Load the Heavy Items First
Once you’ve sorted items, the golden rule is to load heavy items first. Place dense things like books, appliances and furniture along the bottom and sides of the container. This gives you a solid base to stack lighter items on top.
Pack the bottom first with heavy stuff like gym weights, tools and boxes of books. Layer furniture like couches, beds and tables next. Loading the heavy stuff first prevents heavier boxes from crushing lighter ones during transit.
Fill in with Light Items
Now you’re ready to fill in the rest of the space with lighter items. Work top-down and front-to-back. Place boxes and lighter furniture in rows, leaving spaces for heavier items that will be loaded last.
Use this lighter layer to fill gaps around heavier items. Things like clothes, towels and bedding compress easily. Try to fill all spaces evenly so items aren’t shifting around.
Finish with Fragile Items
The last things to load are delicate items like lamps, artwork and electronics. Protect fragile items with blankets or bubble wrap.
Pack them tightly at the very top of the container or in front where they won’t get crushed.Treat fragile stuff like new TVs with extra care. Box items individually and label as fragile. Loading delicate items last minimizes the risk of damage during transit.
Secure Your Load
Before loading up, inspect the container for any sharp edges or protrusions that could damage belongings. Cover problem spots with blankets or padding.
As the container is loaded, use straps, ropes or tension bars to securely fasten the load. This prevents shifting or tipping.
Give boxes extra stability by double-stacking and wedging heavier items around them.Make your load immobile. Use straps across furniture and stacks of boxes so nothing falls over.
Take the time to secure the load properly – your items will thank you! With some organization and strategic loading, you can fit everything safely and efficiently.
Just remember: heavy items on bottom, light fillers in middle, fragile stuff on top. Follow these tips and your storage container will be move-in ready.
